The Therapy - 'My way of working is an integration of several different approaches.
These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, (a branch of cognitive-behavioural
therapy) which is a mindfulness-based therapy shown to be effective with a diverse
range of clinical conditions in short-term work. The goal of ACT is to create a rich
and meaningful life, while accepting the discomforts that are inevitably part of
it.
Understanding childhood roots of styles of thinking and behaviour may be important
even in short-term work but in longer term therapy we may look deeper at early attachments
and relationships. This facilitates the client in understanding how these early experiences
may have affected them, the patterns of behaviour they have used as defences against
difficult emotions and encourages them to evaluate whether these patterns of behaviour
are still necessary and helpful or can gradually be dispensed with and replaced with
more life enhancing behaviour. Of supreme importance in my work is the ability to
meet and relate to clients in an in-depth way. This involves being real and genuine
with my clients, making the implicit explicit, thus increasing the possibility of
deeper connection. Such a relationally deep encounter may be a crucial element in
helping clients overcome their difficulties in therapy.
My way of working also involves many person-centred concepts and practices and I
endeavour to provide a non-judgemental, warm and accepting relationship, as well
as employing certain psychodynamic principals.
My aim is to facilitate greater insight, self-understanding and clarity, increased
self-acceptance, improved interpersonal relationships and a better quality of life.
In this way I offer both short-term or longer term, open ended therapy, with individuals
or couples and I am open to working with sexual minorities.
I also offer EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) which can be used
to treat a variety of emotional and behavioural difficulties, including anxiety,
pain, panic, phobias, procrastination and trauma.
